What Is a .BAT File, and Is It Safe to Open One? (7 views)

23 Oct 2026 13:44

A .BAT file represents a script in Windows that executes the instructions of the Command Prompt. Such scripts are often used to automate certain tasks, manage files, and start applications. Since the .BAT file consists of text commands, it is possible to read its content by right-clicking it and selecting Edit or opening it in Notepad. Doing so will not execute the script's code. Normally, clicking the .BAT file launches the script, which can copy or delete files, change settings, and launch other applications. A BAT file is not automatically harmful, but it may be safe depending on its contents and origin. In case you discover that your valuable files were deleted or became inaccessible after running a script, you should immediately stop saving any information on the disk and use a special program to scan it for recoverable files.
